ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Elizabeth S.Harris
I am Elizabeth Harris and I have had a life-long interest in the coastal areas of the Eastern U.S. and the watermen that earn their livelihood from the sea. I grew upon the coast of New Jersey, spending my childhood sailing and fishing. While living in the mountains of N.Y. State, and creating 3-dimensional fiber sculpture, the lure of the salt water life called me back to my roots. In the early 1980's, I sailed south, down the ICW in a 50 year old wooden cutter, and "discovered" the small fishing village of Oriental. There, I used my skills in form and fiber to become a fabricator of marine canvas products. I started painting in watercolor in recent years, wanting to chronicle the scenes of Eastern Carolina waterways and byways and the rapidly disappearing life of the watermen. I hope to preserve the beauty of the area through my work.

Antoinette Gaskins Mattingly
is a fourth generation Hatteras Island artist. As the daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter of artists, she has enjoyed working in various mediums since childhood. They have all led to the work she creates in clay today. She lives in the historic fishing village of Kinnakeet (Avon), N.C with her husband, their three kids (his and hers), a hound dog and a flock of chickens. Antoinette works full time as a ceramic artist from her home studio where she spends most days making both decorative and functional pottery with the dog barking, chickens clucking and kids running in and out...Life is good!

Jennifer "Jenn" Johnson
"Jenn" Johnson is a lifelong Hatteras Island resident. She attended UNC-CH on a Morehead Scholarship, and graduated with a degree in Journalism before returning to Hatteras. She worked with a real estate company until January 2006. At the urging of friends and family, she turned her photography hobby into a career, exploring the beauty of nature around her through photos, and opening Blue Pelican Gallery (which also features her unique handmade one-of-a-kind jewelry) in Hatteras Village.

Christy Thompson
Christy is a self taught artist, raised in Fayetteville NC and now resides in Goldsboro NC. Her work can be found hanging in homes all over the USA and as far away as Belize. She is prolific in pastels, acrylics, graphite and inks. Christy is the director and co-founder of an organization called "Soul's Palette". This program provides cost free art therapy to chronic and terminally ill patients. She is a member of the NC Coastal Pastel Society, on the board at the Lagrange Art Center and is listed on the "The Global Art Exchange".
Ink Brights are created with alcohol transparent inks and have become one of her favorite mediums. As a child she was always drawn to bright and pure colors. Alcohol inks manage to maintain the purest of colors and allows the artist the joy of learning to manipulate the ebb and flow of the inks. "I first became interested in the inks thinking it would be fun for my patients; however they found it to be less therapeutic than I did...and that's okay. I'm always striving to find new ways to stretch their imaginations and along the way they help me to stretch mine! The sale of my art helps me to continue my work and my journey with those special souls who grace us with their presence at "Soul's Palette". The finished paintings always make my heart smile and I hope it does yours as well!

Scott Geib
My approach to photography is all about living in the moment. I find it extremely gratifying to capture and share that instant with others. Motivated by a creative longing, I purchased my first camera in 1996 at age 38. I have had no formal education as an artist or photographer. I feel that this lack of training has allowed me the freedom to follow my own creative path. I take great pride in the fact that my work comes from an intuitive sense of timing, composition, lighting and balance. I strive to tell simple stories through a complex arrangement of reoccurring patterns and shapes within the composition. My photography has allowed me to travel to many wonderful places, but I always come back to Cape Hatteras, NC. The ever-changing environment and extreme conditions of my barrier island home serve as a constant inspiration.

Theresa Caroon
I have been creating jewelry for almost 30 years. To create a unique piece of art through the use of beads is a passion of mine that I love to share with others. The creative outlet that jewelry gives is heartwarming to say the least. I believe the true joy is when someone receives a piece and the smile they project is overwhelming. I know they truly appreciate the work of art they now wear. The jewelry ranges from simple, yet elegant to the more artful and bold. I hope you find something meant just for you! If you don't however, custom designs are my specialty. I love the opportunity to create a special piece for someone. I would love to create a piece for you! Robert G. Harrison
I work in oil and focus on landscapes, coastal scenes and sailing. Most of my subject material comes from travels and surf trips in North Carolina, the U.S., Latin America and New Zealand, and from wandering around with a camera. I have studied drawing and painting at the Durham Arts Council in Durham, North Carolina. My work has been sold in galleries and selected for juried and one man shows. When I'm not painting, I spend time restoring old houses with my oldest son, sailing a 22 foot sloop, cooking, or surfing.

Stephanie Kiker
I love living at the beach...and on an island. The smells, sounds, water, wind, wildlife all make it a wonderful place to be. This place gives me inspiration for my artwork and creativity. Whether it's on the beach, on the water, under the water, in the marshes, or in the sound I enjoy creating my own interpretations and expressions of the wildlife and their surroundings. Textures, colors, patterns, shapes, movement all play a part in my pieces. I move from realism in my soft pastel works to bold graphic shapes, patterns and colors in my colored pencil and ink work. I graduated from the School of Design at North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic Design and continued in that direction after graduation. I feel lucky to be able to enjoy the natural beauty of this area and experience it much of the time through kiteboarding. Along with the exhilaration of the sport, it gives me the chance to be surrounded by the smells, sounds, water, wind and wildlife that inspire me so much.

Wayne Lockhart Richardson
Richardson is well traveled and feels fortunate that he has experienced a variety of geographic areas, both domestic and overseas, including Britain, Italy, Canada, and Arizona, USA. The photographs from these places in particular have provided creative thought and material that has become his art. He points out that what he creates all starts from his own original photographs. This is the first time this artist’s work has been shown in the United States. He is well known at home in Canada but has chosen a new life style as a live aboard sailor travelling the eastern coast of America and the Intra Coastal Waterway as a Snowbird. The hope is these sea born travels will produce new creative works for us to enjoy.

Howard Young
My passion with the art of photography began in the eighties when I was a Systems Analyst in a computer center in White Plains New York. The White Plains library had an extensive collection of photographic books. I spent my lunch hours for the better part of a year reading every photography book on their shelves. Thus began my self taught adventure with photography in the days of film. I worked three twelve hour days leaving four days for photo clubs, workshops and classes. As a member of the Stamford Ct. Camera Club I won many blue ribbons and photo of the year. I learned to see, the art of composition and gained appreciation for art in general. Now in retirement I use a high end digital SLR camera and my personal computer as my dark room. I strive for a photographic image that incorporates excellent composition through simplicity, superb natural lighting and hopefully a spiritual quality.
