DOWN EAST CANVAS & GALLERY

Many of you will remember "Down East Canvas, Ltd.", with Joe and Elizabeth Harris doing all forms of fine quality marine canvas products for over 20 years in Pamlico County. Their shop, at the foot of the bridge in Oriental, has been synonymous with artfully designed custom projects for power and sail boats. Their distinctive forms flowed gracefully, enhancing the lines and beauty of the boats that they worked on.

After a brief retirement, they have re-opened their business with a new twist.
Elizabeth has begun doing watercolors of eastern North Carolina work boats and harbors, capturing the fleeting scenes of the watermen and the beauty of the area.

They have refurbished their building to house a gallery and canvas shop. The canvas shop still offers the same fine craftsmanship that they are famous for and the gallery hosts artists from the Down East area.

There is a wide array of art and craft items available from original pieces, fine giclee' prints, intricate jewelry, tiles, woodwork, photography, and gift items. The inventory is constantly changing with new works coming in weekly. Many regional artists are represented in many different mediums and styles from contemporary to traditional.

Jennifer Johnson and Scott Geib, photographers from Hatteras Island, offer spectacular scenes of the outer banks with stunning sunsets, wildlife images, and a variety of applications of their art in prints, tiles and translucent glass cutting boards that are as functional as they are beautiful.

Local artist, Margueritte Garrett of Oriental, gives contemporary spin on 'local color' with her colorful acrylic paintings and copper magnets. An unusual medium is demonstrated by Christy Thompson, with her alcohol ink paintings on tile, glass and uppo paper. Her fish and water creatures truly have a fluid quality that is difficult to describe.

Robert Harrison brings to us the movement of sailing and the serenity of the coast with his original oil paintings in rich color and textures. Renowned jewelry artist, Theresa Caroon, exhibits intricate, finely detailed beaded wearable art in 'Swarovski' crystal, fresh water pearls, semi-precious stones, and sterling silver. Local waterman and woodcraftsman, "Tom Thumb" Caroon, has crafted clocks and pens from native pecan, walnut, and exotic hardwoods.

From Buxton, on Hatteras Island, Emily Terrell, has giclee' prints and tiles of lighthouses and sea-life from her original acrylic paintings. Gallery owner, Elizabeth Harris finishes the coastal palate with her reflections of working boats and harbor views in original watercolors and giclee' prints. New artists and crafters continue to contribute their works to "Down East Canvas and Gallery" bringing a new wave of fine art to Oriental.

The gallery is open for your pleasure Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Come in and sit on the "Big Blue Bench", or on the front porch, relax and enjoy the view. We'll look forward to seeing you!
